ELAOS PROJECT Tuberculosis at the Human-Elephant interface First field trip at the Elephant conservation Center in LAOS

We are here at the Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) in Sayaburi district to conduct the ELAOS project which aims at studying the emergence of tuberculosis between humans and elephants. The mission objectives are to meet with the ECC staff and the mahouts to present the project and inform them about the procedures for samples collections. A consent form is signed, a lao medical doctor (Vatthanaphone Latthaphasavang) performs a medical check-up on each mahout and fills in a health questionnaire. Each mahout is also told to bring us a stool and a sputum sample. We are also collecting fecal and blood samples from the elephants during their regular health check-ups. These samples are conserved in different media and will be sent to the Centre d’Infectiologie Lao Christophe Merieux (CILM) in Vientiane, Laos, and to the Pasteur Institute in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for analyses.
