Pr. Mayfong MAYXAY

He graduated from University of Health Sciences (UHS), Lao PDR as a medical doctor in 1993 and worked in the UHS and paediatric ward of Mahosot Hospital in Vientiane from 1994 until 1997 when he was awarded a scholarship from the German Government (GTZ) to study for the Master of Science in Tropical Medicine at the Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Thailand.

In 1998 was promoted and upgraded to do his PhD in Clinical Tropical Medicine at the same Faculty. He completed his PhD with a research entitled “Falciparum malaria antigen and antibody profiles in vivo and antimalarial stage specificity in vitro” in 2001.

In 1999, he co-founded a clinical research unit called “Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome Trust Research Unit or LOMWRU” at Mahosot Hospital, Vientiane, Lao PDR. Prof. Mayfong has led clinical trials of antimalarials and other field clinical research in Laos since 2000.

Between 2002 and 2006, he carried out his Wellcome Trust fellowship training in clinical tropical medicine with the research entitled “Clinical and laboratory studies to guide Lao national antimalarial drug policy”, which was associated with Mahidol and Oxford Universities. The results from his research led to the change of the Lao national policy for uncomplicated falciparum malaria treatment from chloroquine and sulphadoxine-pyrimethamine to ACTs (artemether-lumefantrine) in 2005.

He is the key person who established the first Lao Ethical Committee in 2002 and the first Lao Medical Journal in 2009.
Recently, he has co-founded a Unit for Health Evidence and Policy (UHEP) at the Lao University of Health Sciences, Ministry of Health with the aim to act as a platform for the analysis of the policy relevant scientific and health economics evidence to address key public health issues in Laos.

Prof. Mayfong’s particular research interests include antimalarial drug resistance and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), causes of fever, sepsis, dengue, rickettsial infections, melioidosis, leptospirosis, Japanese encephalitis virus infection and infantile beriberi. At present, he has been supervising the UHS research team to carry out some research on COVID-19 in Laos. So far, he has published 184 papers, which are indexed in PubMed. Each year, he supervises ~ 15-20 medical, Master, PhD students’; residents’; and fellows’ theses.
